Sumatra - Off the beaten Path

Our destination, which we reached well after dark was the end of the road, and the tiny town of Bukit Lawang. This was the jewel in the crown of Sumatran tourism

Land of lakes, mountains and waterfalls

There are towns and villages scattered about, but they tend to be sleepy affairs with some of the regular facilities, a couple of bars, a cinema showing slightly out of date Hollywood films, and caravan parks and camp sites from the same era.

Right then... after a week of bumming along Venezuala´s North West Caribbean Coast, cold beer, fresh fish, and warm, tropical seas, we decided to get our adventurous hats on again, so with my trusty old exploring sun hat and lots of insect repellent,

I saw a horribly worrying statistic a few months ago - apparently nowadays, more people from the UK visit Thailand than Spain each year. I had a nasty image in my mind of football shirt wearing hoards, the "more earrings than a-levels" brigade dominating the streets of Thailand. Thankfully, this hasn't come true - although we have only been travelling in the North, and haven't visited the more touristic areas in the South, where the tsunami only brought a temporary halt to the onslaught, and where the beaches are yet again full of roasting pink package tour flesh.

A Ghastly Tour of Cambodia's Killing Fields

There is a popular book on the backpacker circuit at the moment. Written by an American journalist about Phnom Penh during the 1990s, its subtitle says it all - Guns, Girls and Ganja. Although it's nowadays a safer and more accessible place, and has become a popular tourist destination due to the amazing temples at Angkor Wat, Cambodia retains its edge of craziness, and its history over the last 30 years probably explains a lot - the turbulence in Cambodian politics over this period makes Germany in the 1930s look positively boring in comparison.
